How Voxstrum works, from your first sign-in to your first scored take — and what each plan gives you.
Checked against the app on (Android build 0.124.1). Voxstrum is in closed testing on Google Play.
Voxstrum is on Google Play, in closed testing. Join the test group and we'll email you the opt-in link; once you've opted in, the app installs from Play like any other. Open it and tap Sign Up — you need an email address, a password and a display name.
The first thing the app asks is your age band. It uses this to apply the right safety rules: learners under 13 need a parent or guardian's email, and the guardian has to agree by email before any AI feature will run for that account.
You'll also get a verification email. Tap the link, then switch back to the app. If it doesn't arrive within a minute, check your spam folder or tap Resend verification in the app.
During onboarding you pick what you play or want to learn. Voxstrum teaches 10 instruments, each with its own interactive board:
How many instruments you can hold at once depends on your plan: Bronze one, Silver up to five, Gold and above all ten. You can change instruments later under Profile → Music Preferences.
Tap the Learn tab. Each instrument has a learning path at three levels — beginner, intermediate and advanced — and there are 236 lessons across the ten instruments. A Quick start card at the top of each instrument shows posture and hand position before you begin.
Each lesson has four steps:
Read what you're about to play and why. Five beginner lessons include a video; the rest explain it in text.
A diagram of your instrument with numbered finger dots. Place your fingers exactly as shown.
Play along with the live board while the app listens. On pitched instruments each target note lights green when it hears you play it.
Jot down anything you found tricky. Your note is saved with the lesson for next time.
On Bronze you can complete 5 lessons a month on the beginner path; paid plans have no lesson cap and open every level.
After the Record step, Voxstrum measures your take on your phone: how evenly your notes land (timing), how close to pitch they are (pitch), how many of the target notes you hit (accuracy) and how steady that was (consistency). Only those numbers, with the lesson name and your instrument, are sent to our server, where an AI model turns them into a short coaching note and a suggestion for what to practise next. Your recording never leaves your phone.
Scores need pitched notes. Drum takes, and any take where no notes were detected or the microphone was refused, are logged and get a coaching note but no scores.
Each plan has a monthly allowance of AI feedback sessions:
| Plan | AI feedback a month |
|---|---|
| Bronze (free) | 10 AI feedback sessions |
| Silver | 50 AI feedback sessions |
| Gold | 100 AI feedback sessions |
| Platinum | 200 AI feedback sessions |
| Multi Platinum | 100 AI feedback sessions, for the account holder. Linked students use their own plan's allowance (on Bronze: 10 AI feedback sessions). |
Your allowance renews on the 1st of each month (UTC), whatever day you subscribed. The usage bar under your plan badge in Profile shows how many you've used. Learners under 13 get no AI feedback until a guardian has consented.
Complete at least one practice session a day to grow your streak — even five minutes counts. Miss a day and you get one day's grace; miss two in a row and the streak starts again. Streaks are counted in your local time.
The Progress tab shows your current streak, total practice time, a weekly activity chart, a breakdown by instrument, your AI feedback usage and your milestones. Milestone badges unlock at 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 lessons completed.
Set practice reminders in the weekly planner, and add the Voxstrum home-screen widget to keep your streak in view on the home screen.
For learners under 18 the streak counter is hidden unless a parent or guardian turns it on, so nobody feels pressured to practise.
The Ear Training tab has four drills — intervals, chords, scales and rhythm — on every plan. Guitarists also get a Fretboard Notes trainer from the Learn tab: name the note at a given string and fret.
Under Profile → Tools, the step-by-step tuning wizard listens to each string in turn for guitar, bass, ukulele and violin. Piano gets a tap-to-hear note map. There's no tuning tool yet for drums, voice, saxophone, trumpet or flute, so the tile is hidden for those instruments.
The Library tab holds 30 play-along tracks — public-domain folk and classical pieces such as Amazing Grace, Ode to Joy and Scarborough Fair, plus one Voxstrum original. 23 have full backing audio; the other seven are short chord drills the app plays with synthesised chords.
Bronze opens 7 of the 30 tracks, Silver 20, and Gold and above all 30. Tracks a teacher assigns play on a student's free account.
Switch to Create in the header to open Studio. It comes with Platinum and with Multi Platinum for the account holder. Each song has four tabs:
You can export MusicXML (opens in MuseScore and most notation apps), MIDI, or a lyrics-and-chords sheet. Studio audio — takes, overdubs and dictation clips — is kept for 24 hours after upload and then deleted, so save a WAV in that window if you want the recording. Your lyrics, chords and notation stay with the song.
Multi Platinum adds a Students screen. Generate an invite code and your learner enters it in their own app; you can link up to 5 students. Students under 13 can only be linked after a guardian has agreed by email.
A linked student keeps their own plan — usually the free Bronze account: one instrument on the beginner path, 5 lessons a month and 10 AI feedback sessions a month. Linking doesn't copy your plan to them. What it does give you:
You can't see a student's Studio projects — those stay private to them.
Voxstrum has five plans, in price order: Bronze (free), Silver, Gold, Platinum and Multi Platinum. Compare them in the app under Profile → View plans, or on the pricing page.
While Voxstrum is in closed testing, nothing is on sale: every Upgrade button in the test build ends in "Purchase failed", which is expected. During the test, the test key in your welcome email unlocks Multi Platinum for 90 days, redeemed under Profile → Promo & beta access, so every feature can be tried; spot holders also get 6 months of Multi Platinum through a separate key we send when Voxstrum launches. When plans go on sale they'll be billed through Google Play, and you'll be able to cancel from your Play subscriptions. There is no iPhone version yet.
In the app, go to Profile → Support. Report a bug lets you attach a screenshot and reaches us directly; Request a feature is there too. The same screen links to What's new, this guide and the known issues page.
Or email support@voxstrum.app.
Join the Android test, install Voxstrum and pick up your instrument. Your streak starts today.
